One other point. When I used the FTDI/Sparkfun cables to update an old 1980 solution (MAX232/7404 design with opto-isolators), that used an old Intel 8251 UART --- I had to Cross the TxD/RxD and RTS/CTS lines for proper operation. That should be tested for your specific board implementations, BEFORE finalizing the CAD/PC Board layouts.
