Thanks, Josh. Yes, shorted tantalum caps are both common and spectacular. My problems with these, however, have subsided considerably since replacing my old linear boat-anchor power supply with a switcher – a MeanWell QP-200F, same as I put into my new computer. The regulator pass-transistor in the old PS had a habit of shorting on a regular basis, putting nearly 40V out to the disk drives. I had enough after the 5th or 6th repair job to the PS and, usually to the disk drives too. I have also replaced the LED half of the index sensor on several. The old ones were infrared, but I found a bright-white LED worked satisfactory too – and now I can tell if it stops working. I have started having door latch problems as the plastic gets old and brittle, and I think I have a bad head on one drive. I have cannibalized one of the drives to keep the others working. I have a complete set of technical literature, including schematics, so I will be able to keep these running, theoretically, indefinitely as long as I can find parts or non-functional parts donors. Now with two computers in need of floppy drives, I need to get more. Are you interested in selling your two? I have 2 of these drives that came with my IMSAI. They were not working, but weren't hard to fix. I drew up a schematic for them, you might be able to find it by searching the web. What I really want to say, was there wasn't much wrong with them. The tantalum capacitors were shorted, Photo slot switches were not working, I found decent replacements at Digi-Key... I'll try to find the right part number.
Cheers, Josh

I have completed the backplane (N8VEM version 2) and power portions of my new S-100 computer (I'll post some photos when I get a chance...) and now I am searching for 8" floppy disk drives for it. My original S-100 (from the late '70s, and still working) is standardized on the Siemens FDD100-8 using a CCS 2422 Controller. I have several of these drives, some not working, and was interested in using the same model drive in this new machines for the sake of consistency and because I have complete owner and service manuals for these drives. My question to the group:
Does any one know of a source for these drives, or does anyone have any of these drives, working or not, that they would be interested in selling? I had acquired several of the units I have from Ebay, but I have not seen any on there for several years now.
Thanks for your help!
