Rob - I just scanned the User Guide for Roving Networks (now Microchip Technology) WIFLY module. The 1 MB maximum data rate version (RN131G-I) for Security/Home Automation market, would not overtax an ECB or S-100 based system. ~ $30 good price, and they are working on the firmware for the Access Point (AP) mode. Does your module has the Web Server working for device setup/configuration?
I used the RN-XV module. With that device, the setup is command line utility. You telnet to the device, type a 'magic' character sequence, and device responds with a configuration prompt. The setup took a couple of minutes. Rob.
