Neil, what exactly has failed. Will it seek, move to track zero (restore) with a restore command if the head is wound inwards. Are you just getting misreads. Often on the latter I have seen people toss drives only to see that the problem was buildup of oxide on the read/write heads. It appears as a streak on the glass like surface of the head(s) and often has to be carefully scraped off with a blade.
