S100 Motherboards - why so small?

The first thing I found out while building boards, is that you fill a 8 (or 9 for that matter) slot motherboard pretty fast. Is there a particular reason for not pursuing a larger board, like Ant's 18 slot?  https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/n8vem-s100/ants$20pants/n8vem-s100/0S9xGTvyg-A/YWKX9_r4PRIJ) With Anchor selling the connectors at $4 a piece (http://anchor-electronics.com/product/100-pin-125-inch-card-edge-connector/) I am not sure that is as much of a deterrent as it once was.
