I thought the same thing when I was fixing my IMSAI front panel. But I guess the drivers back then were rock solid, they don't build them like that anymore! Just kidding. But in truth, I just see those LED's as a form of line termination. Just the same, you can always use the new low power LED's. I do because I like bright lights.
