Re: [N8VEM-S100:5924] SOIC Packages For S100 Boards - Survey Question

Hi Don,

The youngsters in this group (under 30 crowd) can probably do 25 or more smds with just a jeweler's loop or head mount magnifiers. Speaking for me, and anyone else whose over 50-60 years old, head mounted magnifiers just won't cut it. I have had access to a company's boom stand inspection microscope, with annular fluorescent lamp, and with it, I CAN do smd chips with wire solder all day. I just can't pop for the $500 - $2000 cost of these beasties.

I'm curious how you guys feel about using SOIC chips
instead of the traditional DIP. Yes they are a bit more
difficult to solder up and don't have a socket for easy
replacement.

I was wanting to add additional chips and a 10 position DIP
switch to the FP mini design. However there is just not enough
room. I may be able to squeeze them in but it would be very tight
and fear there may be no room for traces.
